Bat Yam came to a quick and busy end. I am going to start off by saying that Saturday night before I was going to upload a new post, my computer broke which is why it has taken so long for me to update my blog. As of right now, my computer has been fixed then broken again and the plan is to try to fix it again when the parents come in two weeks. I am using my roommates computer now because she is on the army program in the negev so she isn't around during the week. Here are a few bigger events that happened the last week in Bat Yam.
Education:
Monday was the Hebrew Oral Final which was very successful. A friend, Kayleigh and I had to create a 7 minute long skit about being in the shook and it all had to be memorized. I played the shop keeper and Kayleigh was the tourist. We had different scenes for different stands with lots of props, our teacher loved it. Kayleigh's mom was in town so after the final, since we had extra time until Zionism, we went to Aroma at the mall for a celebratory second breakfast.
Wednesday was our written Hebrew final and our Zionism final. Both went well. Aparently, our Hebrew test was the same as level 4's test so we were very proud of ourselves. Again, Kayleigh and I went to a Cafe for a celebratory second breakfast with her mom. We went back to the college for our Zionism final which was a short answer open book test. After we finished, we had a little party and discussed what we thought about the class and how the teacher could make improvments.
Tuesday:
Tuesday night the kids going to Rwanda and I set up an Auction for our section. It took place in the community center gym and was suprisingly a huge success. We auctioned off a variety of things including a one hour massage, a meal for your entire apartment, cleaning your entire apartment, a date with our madrich, an extra day off, a dance lesson from a madrich, star gazing (with me!) and many other things. While we were planning the event, I was worried no one would bid for things because i always here people complaining about how little money they have. Boy was i wrong! Stargazing with me, an event that will cost nothing for any of the parties started at 5 shekels (about $1.25). My event was sold at 100 shekels (about $25)!!!! In that one night, we raised almost $1000!!!!! So far, including the auction, the tshirts we sold and the online donors, we have raised around $4000 already!!!!!!!!!!
Volunteering:
Sunday we had a normal day but realized our time was waining with the people there. During the day, the elderly there can play cards, just sit there or do crafts. If they choose crafts, then they can make something for family or just fun. For example, they can make pillows. I asked the crafts lady who works there what they do with the pillows or any of the other crafts, cause i secretly wanted a pillow for myself, and she told me they sell the pillows then gave me one for free as a gift!! I was so shocked and happy at the same time!
Tuesday was our final volunteering day. We stayed a little extra longer and had a little special presentation. One of the kids in our group knows how to play guitar so we sang a few songs. The first song we sang was Odevo Shalom Aleinu which they all new. The second song was Let It Be by the Beatles but instead of singing the entire song in English, a language most of them didn't know, we sang the chorus in Hebrew. Many of them knew the song in English and Hebrew and sang along. They wanted an encoure so we played a song most of us knew called I'm Yours by Jason Mraz. We said a sad goodbye to everyone, got a few more gifts from the women that work there then we were off to study for our tests.
Thursday:
EG arrived in Israel early Thursday morning which was a lot of fun!!! We slept in since he didnt sleep the night before and then went Thanksgiving shopping with my apartment at the Super Douche. This is the same super market that EG shopped at when he was on Year Course so he was very excited! For Thanksgiving, my apartment had over 30 people for dinner including the Israeli scouts. Every apartment who came had to bring a different dish which made dinner very successful along with a lot of food!
Friday:
EG and I woke up bright and early to meet his friend from Year Course at the shook in Tel Aviv who made aliyah who he has not seen since year course. After walking around and catching up a bit, we parted ways and EG and I went to the Azrieli Towers to go to the observatory where you can see all of Tel Aviv. This was the second time I went to the Towers for the observatory and again, it was closed for a private party! We got on the last bus back to Bat Yam in time for a nap and then Shabbat dinner. Friday night was the Section two Prom, the final party for everyone before we leave for Arad. The club was small but fit us well and the scouts who planned it got us an open bar...fabulous if you know your limits, but sadly, many of the kids don't...so much so that as we were leaving the club, a few kids got in a fight with passing Russians. One of our kids had to go to the hospital and get stitches...not good for anyone.
Saturday:
EG and I woke up late because of the festivities the night before. When we got home the night before, one of my friends who was trying to get kids out of the fight came over to our apartment to clean up and sleep over. EG heard the ruckus in the middle of the night and came to join our little tea drinking and talking about the fight. In the morning, we went to the beach and stayed until sunset. EG ran into a friend of his from year course who happens to be the little sister of my madricha. After Shabbat EG and I skyped with family in Richland who were enjoying their Thanksgiving meal. We had to use EG's computer because mine broke.
Saturday night, my apartment, EG and I went out to dinner at the Port in Tel Aviv.
Sunday: Our last day in Bat Yam.
Sunday moring we had a meeting at the college including an evaluation of the 3 months in Bat Yam and a final meeting with Eyal and his apartments. EG met me there so we could go to 5 Shekel Falafel in Holon, Bat Yam's neighboring city where EG lived on YC. We walked around Holon then back to my apartment where my work was cut out for me. I had to clean and finish packing. Eyal and upper staff in Bat Yam were supposed to come and do a final check in our apartment. Eyal came late so it caused EG and i to leave later for the Dizengauf center in Tel Aviv to fix my computer. I was only 10 minutes late from the last service so my computer was still broken. EG left Bat Yam at 11 PM in order to catch the buses the would take him to the aiport so he wouldn't have to take an exensive taxi.
Monday:
My roommates and I woke up early to go to a 24 hour breakfast place in Tel Aviv called Benedicts. We ran into some friends there but kept our distance to have our final apartment time, especially with Noy. We got a bus home, took a few hour long nap, brought our bags downstairs and said goodbye to Livorno 11.
Young Judaea Year Course:
Year Course is a gap year program in Israel for teens who just graduated high school before entering college. Our nine months are divided into three sections. I start off the Year in Bat Yam, just south of Tel Aviv, where we volunteer in the community. In the winter, we head down to the Negev (Israel's desert) hopefully to do outdoor work. Finally, we end the year in Jerusalem studying and also volunteering. Throughout the year, we study hebrew and live in apartments with fellow Year Course participants.
I am participating in the Social Action track of Year Course, traveling to Rwanda for the entire month of February. We are living at a youth village (made by Year Course alumni) working with orphaned children.
